What can be handled remotely, and what usually needs in-person help?

Remote help is useful when the device is working and the senior can safely follow simple steps. In-person help is better when the device, Wi-Fi, printer, screen or setup itself needs hands-on work.

Often possible remotely

  • Email setup, email not sending and inbox cleanup
  • Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp and video-call practice
  • Making text bigger on iPhone, Android, iPad, Windows or Mac
  • Finding missing apps, files, photos and downloads
  • Password reset guidance while the senior stays in control
  • Checking suspicious emails, texts and pop-up warnings
  • Installing safe apps from official app stores
  • Photo sharing, albums and basic cloud photo questions
  • Streaming app navigation and account sign-in guidance
  • Browser tabs, bookmarks, search and website basics
  • Calendar, contacts, reminders and emergency contact setup
  • Computer updates, app updates and simple settings
  • Bluetooth pairing guidance when the device is nearby
  • Practice sessions for repeated questions
  • Family update summaries with permission

Usually better in person

  • New phone, tablet or computer unboxing and setup
  • Printer installation, paper jams and Wi-Fi printer connection
  • Wi-Fi router checks, weak signal and device reconnection
  • Blue screen, startup loops or computer will not turn on
  • Phone will not charge, cable/port confusion or battery concerns
  • Tablet or laptop screen, keyboard, mouse or trackpad issues
  • TV, streaming box and remote-control setup
  • Moving photos/files between old and new devices
  • Connecting headphones, speakers, keyboards or smart watches
  • Home office wiring, cable confusion and basic desk setup
  • Accessibility setup that needs hands-on testing
  • Repeated app login problems where a second person helps read codes
  • Scanning, printing forms and basic document handling
  • Training sessions at retirement communities or libraries
  • Any situation where the senior feels more comfortable with someone there
